Two interrelated factors determine how much something is worth—perceptions of value, and market performance. Both are subject to change based on a number of factors, such as trends in demand, provenance, the locations where artworks are sold, and by whom. Let’s begin by looking at perceptions of value—those qualities buyers expects find in artworks that ask substantial prices.
